Why I do what I do
As a youth I was extremely active and grew up playing many competitive sports. In High School, I played four years of football. Unfortunately, with the aggressive nature of tackling, I sustained a few concussions and stingers due to high velocity impacts. On two separate occasions as a young adult, I experienced whiplash injuries as a result of serious skiing falls. Consequently, I had recurring neck pain and I was just 17 yrs. old. I never mentioned my neck discomfort to my parents figuring it would just go away as I was not one to complain, but the symptoms just became more frequent and intense. In my early twenties, my symptoms worsened and I began to develop a torticollis syndrome with a few weight lifting exercises. Torticollis is a severe spasm of the neck with a resultant head tilt. Each episode of torticollis would last a few weeks and eventually resolve with time; however, the frequency and intensity of my symptoms elevated. Ignorantly, I would return to my normal life and ignore my issues. At the age of twenty four I sought out chiropractic care based on a family member’s recommendation for relief.
Chiropractic care instantly resolved my torticollis and alleviated my neck discomfort. The torticollis to this date has never returned. However, the chronic stress and irritation to my cervical spine over the years has resulted in a moderate degree of permanent irreversible osteoarthritis at such a young age. Unfortunately, my cervical spine is bothersome to some degree everyday and related to activities. I have managed it effectively through chiropractic care, supplementation and exercise. However, the chronic neck discomfort is a constant reminder that I ignored the warning signs earlier in life when I should have done something about it and could have prevented the degenerative changes. I had a problem which I could have resolved with being attentive and speaking out, but at the time I didn’t know any better. My reluctance to be proactive and treat my neck problems from the onset has prevented me from living a better quality of life.
Although the damage has been done, chiropractic has preserved and prevented my body from deteriorating any further. Chiropractic has allowed me to function at a higher level in activities without the repercussions of pain. In personally experiencing the value and benefits of chiropractic, I have made it my personal goal and professional mission to become a spokes person and advocate of chiropractic. It is my intention to reach out and educate people in our community on the importance of listening to your body and being proactive with your health. I became a chiropractor with the intention to help people who suffer from any conditions like I have to live a better quality of life. The most rewarding aspect of what I do is the gratification I receive from positively impacting the lives of individuals and families.
As I have learned the hard way, you are only given one body and cannot replace it; therefore, it is paramount you cherish and support your personal house. Unfortunately, most people take their body for granted and if there is no pain then there is no problem. That is an irresponsible way to live and my goal is to help people realize the need to be more conscious and proactive in maintaining healthy habits. My philosophy is that we know our bodies better than anyone, and its time to start to listen to them. Give me the chance to teach you how to listen to your body and learn from my experience.
